Description
What is Intuitive Eating?
Intuitive Eating is an approach developed to help people heal from the side effects of chronic dieting. An intuitive eater is defined as a person who “makes food choices without experiencing guilt or an ethical dilemma, honors hunger, respects fullness and enjoys the pleasure of eating.” Intuitive eating is not a weight loss technique, however it promotes mindful eating and can teach you how to eat in moderation which ultimately could lead to weight loss.
Eating intuitively is a way of eating that has nothing to do with diets, meal plans, discipline or willpower. It’s about getting back to your body’s natural intuition and making peace with foods. Much like flexible eating, it’s about rejecting a diet mentality, whilst also focusing on your internal bodily cues like hunger, fullness and satisfaction, and moving away from external cues like food rules and restrictions.
About the Course
Every week for 8 weeks, you’ll be given a weekly lesson and habit to focus on that will promote the concept of intuitive eating and help you develop more mindfulness in respect to your eating. Using these practices, you will slowly adjust your approach and adopt a subtle shift in how you make decisions in respect to food. You will also tune in to important cues and signals from your body in respect to hunger and fullness. Try to build on each new habit as you go along, so that you continue to practice and incorporate your habit from week 1 into week 2, week 3 and so on.
You’ll learn:
- How to use self-compassion to develop a healthful relationship with food
- How to use intuitive eating to support your mental and physical health
- How to choose your food in the ideal portions for whole body health without the stress of weighing & measuring
- How to tune into your body’s internal signals in respect to hunger and satiation
- How to overcome restrictive rules about eating and create a buffer to the dieting mentality
Why do it?
Did you know that the average person gains 11 pounds for every diet they go on?! The number 1 reason most people gain weight again after dieting is because restriction only perpetuates most people’s issues with overeating. Caloric restriction promoted by most diets causes hunger, which typically stimulates cravings and often results in a loss of muscle. Losing muscle is not beneficial when it comes to improving body composition as muscle gives our bodies the definition most of us are looking for. Even more significant than that, losing muscle causes our metabolism to slow down, making it ever harder to lose weight.
Dieting typically doesn’t lead to long-term success, because most diets don’t provide us with any practical tools to apply to real life scenarios when we eat; most specifically how to eat outside of the kitchen at social gatherings when we’re most susceptible to temptation and peer pressure. The restrictive mindset brought on by diets is harmful to our psyche and relationship with food, teaching us to experience shame and guilt in respect to certain foods which can lead to binging and emotional overeating.
During this course, you’ll get a rich array of tools, tips, and exercises to help you start improving your eating habits and behaviors around food so that you can enjoy a more peaceful relationship with food and yourself. Implementing these lessons will help you overcome obstacles and replace bad patterns that years of dieting have caused.
