Transformation Tuesday – Keith Genco

When did you start Flexible Eating?
I started a little over 8 weeks ago.
What prompted you to get started?
The first week of the Crossfit open I underperformed to my standards, ran out of wind, and realized I had gotten soft at some point. I was referred to Jason by a friend who raved about his methods.
What changes have you noticed in your body?
I’ve lost about 15#. I really wasn’t looking forward to losing weight, just losing fat. Traditionally I would lose muscle, fat, and strength all at the same time. But I’ve come to use performance and the mirror, and only the scale as a reference. My waist has shrunk considerably, as all my pants are too big, and even elastic waist crossfit shorts needed to be replaced for fear they’d fall off mid wod. My wod times have come down, and all gymnastic movements got easier. No maxes tested yet, but on a pound per pound basis, I know I’m stronger.
What has been your biggest obstacle that you have overcome or are working on?
The first thing I had to figure out was how to spread my food out across the day. When I started, unlike some people, I was coming home to needing 50% of my carbs within 3 hours of bed. I’ve figured out the best ways to eat more evenly throughout the day. I travel for work, and on the road, fat is easily the hardest to keep in check. Without trying I’ve had 15g of fat left at 10AM. Eating out is very fatty, and I find I have to be very creative to make it work.
What’s one piece of advice you would give someone that is just getting started?
JUST START. I have never really had visible abs. I was always better at sports than I was at looking like I am good at sports. As a 4 sport athlete at 18 I was soft. Now, at 39, I look like I’ve always had this level of leanness. The change happened so fast for me!! Is it shallow to want to look better? Probably, but that’s why I wanted. I am admittedly obsessive about it, and barely have had a cheat meal in 2 months. But that’s easy because I can build around eating a pint of ice cream at night!
