It’s avocado season! My second favorite time of the year – after Christmas ooobviously. And this year I’ve been lucky enough to broaden my experiences beyond Cayman’s home-grown & imports as I’ve sampled some of the finest California grown avocados from San Francisco to LA. Clearly I wasn’t going to be able to leave either location without experiencing Instagram’s most annoying food trend, the Avocado Toast.
So what is it and why is it so annoying? Essentially avocado toast is an open-faced sandwich with mashed up avocado, or avocado schmear as I also like to call it because it sounds fancy. It requires absolutely zero cooking expertise and if you’re worried about your mashing skills well don’t, just buy some fresh guacamole à la Whole Foods and you’ve essentially elevated your creation to restaurant standards. So why is it so annoying? Well ordinarily I’m loathed to order anything when I’m out that I could easily make myself, especially when the price tag is usually $13 plus! But there’s something irresistibly delicious about this meal that makes me lose my senses & whenever I see it on the menu I find myself excitedly asking the waiter “are your avocados fresh this morning?!”
Needless to say, I was unable to leave the West Coast without exploring the diverse options of Avocado Toast I knew would be on offer. I finally succumbed to my senselessness at The Butcher’s Daughter, Venice on Abbot Kinney Blvd, aka the ‘coolest block in America‘ according to GQ – yes I know, I’m not quite sure how I wound up there either! The allure of a flavour profile including cilantro, lime & mustard seed also helped seal the deal and in spite of the additional $2 cost, I ordered the Farm Egg as an add-on. A healthy sized portion was delivered on a wooden board (trendy as shit!) & I wasn’t disappointed by the taste either as bursts of citrus & fresh herbs tantalised my taste buds as promised.
So what’s the verdict? Well, I can’t fault The Butcher’s Daughter for tagging along on the latest health food craze & nor can I fault them in their delivery of a simple yet modish version of the Avocado Toast. The bread was superbly toasted and the avocado expertly mashed and schmeared! I did however suffer a pinch of food envy & regret as I sat across from two guys sharing the “Surfer’s Breakfast”, a breakfast burrito and the “Petersen’s Buckwheat Pancakes,” which looked phenomenal! Kinda felt like this…
But hey, don’t let me put you off, just make sure you’ve set your expectations at the right level before you get carried away with your avocado toast orders. Or at least make sure you’re eating out with someone willing to give you a bite of their pancakes in exchange for an avocuddle… 😉
INGREDIENTS:
I know you don’t need ingredients or instructions! But just in case you want to know exactly how to recreate the deliciousness I made above, here’s a list of the foods I used & 3 simple steps:
- Artisan Bake Shoppe, Ancient Grains Bread from Whole Foods
- Fresh Guacamole courtesy of Whole Foods
- Rabbit River Farms Egg Whites, Whole Foods
- Place bread in a toaster;
- Microwave egg whites in tupperware lightly covered with a lid or cling film – helps avoid egg-splosions! 😉
- Schmear guacamole over toast & season lightly with salt, pepper & maybe even some hot sauce. Go wild, release your inner chef! throw your egg whites on the side or right on top of your very own avocado toast. Enjoy!
