Lifestyle Member of the Month Inside Scoop
How long have you been working with Own Your Eating?
Since January 27, 2019.
What made you decide to give flexible eating a try?
As a CrossFit coach I had a lot of friends and members asking me about counting macros. Just simple questions like, how they work, if they work, basically any advice I could give them and if I thought macros would be right for them. My husband and I have made a pretty good effort at bettering our diet over the last few years, but we typically go in cycles. He’s a Varsity softball coach and I coach CrossFit in the evenings, so we get really busy and aren’t home much. We clean it up, go off track, try a new approach, life gets busy, and then we end up searching for the next thing that interests us or challenges us to get better. We have successfully tried Whole30, Zone and most recently the 800 gram Challenge, but only stick to them 2-3 months at a time. Zone and the 800g Challenge were the two we held on to the longest, but still, once we got busy, other things took priority. The knowledge I gained from doing Zone and 800 gram made it very easy to transition into counting macros for me. It already provided the base knowledge on how to plan a balanced meal that fit into my macros, I just wasn’t measuring as closely when I did Zone. A huge part of why I decided to give this is a try is because I want to be able to help the athletes that I work with make an educated decision about what “diet” would fit their lifestyle. It’s also been exciting to challenge myself and see how dialed in I could get and see that dedication pay off. While I know whole foods are best, having the ability to quickly fit a granola bar into my diet has been a game changer as we get busier and have less time to prep meals.
What was the hardest part when you started out and how did you overcome that?
The hardest part was making time in my schedule to prep the food I want and I know should be in my diet versus choosing the easy, processed foods. But I’ve found the key is to make sure I schedule that time!
What is one thing you’re most proud of?
I’m proud that I stepped out of my comfort zone and signed up with Own Your Eating so that I could learn from someone who is more knowledgeable about nutrition than I am. I’m proud of my commitment to the process.
What, in your opinion, has kept you consistent all this time?
The increase in energy, endurance and recovery in the gym is number one. But also comparing photos week to week. It’s exciting to see the small changes and compare them back to week 1 when I feel like I’m not making much progress.
What do you do for fitness?
I CrossFit 5 days a week.
Anything crazy on your bucket list?
Nothing crazy. I just want to continue traveling and exploring places we haven’t been to yet. Lake Tahoe and Alaska are both at the top of my list.
What is your favorite food and why?
I love pizza! Because it’s delicious.
What is your least favorite food and why?
Asparagus. My husband loves it and I’m just not a fan. The smell, the texture, everything. Gross.
What has been your biggest surprise about working with Own Your Eating?
I was surprised at how quickly I leaned out. And how just 10g of carbs can make a huge difference. I was losing really fast the first week, and by adding 10g of carbs, it really made me realize how exact I needed to be if I wanted to see immediate success. It’s so much easier to commit to something when you see immediate results. I’m glad I fully committed from the very beginning.
Would you recommend Own Your Eating to others and if so, why?
Absolutely! Laura has been a pleasure to work with and isn’t just coaching me on macros. She’s sent messages about personal growth and she has challenged me to do things within my diet that align with my goals. I loved that she was able to provide recommendations for how to eat for a competition that I participated in. It’s just been a great experience overall.
